The Star has held a Michelin star since 2002 and remains the benchmark for eating out in the North York Moors. The inn itself is a long, low thatched building in the village of Harome, three miles from Helmsley, with flagged floors, a beamed bar and cooking that stays firmly rooted in Yorkshire produce — moorland game, local lamb, foraged ingredients and its own bread and preserves.

Accommodation is across the lane at Cross House Lodge, where thirteen rooms have been fitted out individually and with some humour: one has a rope-slung bed, another a full-size snooker table, and the newer barn rooms take a cleaner, more contemporary line. Breakfast is taken in the Wheelhouse around a large communal table, and it is worth getting up for.

Book dinner when you book the room, because tables go quickly and the kitchen is the point of the trip. Beyond the plate, Harome is a good jumping-off spot for Rievaulx, Nunnington Hall and the Howardian Hills, and Helmsley's shops and castle are a short drive. The inn was rebuilt after a fire and reopened in 2023, so the fabric is in excellent order.
