Keel Lodges - Coble Cottage

Coble Cottage is one of several former World War I army barracks that have been converted into holiday lodging at Keel Lodges. This particular unit sits on the ground floor, combining a living space, dining area and kitchen in an open-plan layout, with a bedroom and ensuite bathroom. The restoration has retained the rustic character of the original building while making it comfortable for a short stay. Bed linen, electricity and gas central heating are included, along with wifi and parking on site.
The cottage sleeps two in single beds and sits within spacious grounds near Staithes, a fishing village built into clifftop above a small harbour. A two-minute walk down the cobbled high street reaches shops, pubs and cafés. The location puts you close to the Cleveland Way for moorland and coastal walks, and Whitby Abbey is 11 miles away. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway runs through the area, and Scaling Reservoir, about 7 miles off, offers sailing and fishing. A leisure centre is 2 miles down the road. One well-behaved pet stays free; smoking is not permitted.

Fantastic WWI barracks really well converted into a bungalow that sleeps 6. The owner was incredibly helpful and friendly. Each room has an en-suite and the beds are really comfortable. Its situation is perfect for exploring North Yorkshire and Staithes is such a beautiful, quaint little seaside town. My only small gripe is that the sofas are a little tired and you somewhat sink into the floor when you recline. Apart from that it is perfect. The kitchen is well equipped with a good array of cooking pans and implements. This made cooking for 5 people easy. There's even a toastie maker! The fridge-freezer is large and will easily hold enough food for a large family. The TV is a smart TV so really easy to connect any OD TV services. The TV is large enough, and the seating area laid out well enough for everyone to be able to comfortably watch. Oh... If you plan on prepping food, you should probably bring your own knife. I forgot, to my cost.. As with all self catering places, the knives are blunter than Gene Hunt. I don't envy holiday cottages keeping up with the abuse that most people show to kitchen knives. In summary, I would have zero hesitation in recommending Bosuns Rest as an amazing place to stay in North Yorkshire. The cottage is well equipped, comfortable, spacious with great views and perfectly situated for all manner of activities! Edit 2026: Just got back after a fantastic and poignant holiday back here. There are new sofas that are incredibly comfortable. There are new knives that are sharp. I absolutely love this cottage - It holds such happy memories for us as a family as it was my wife's last holiday before she died and coming back to the familiarity of this place was so comforting. Massive thanks to Sarah for everything!

A great 4 night stay at Captain's Quarters for our group of 3 families Loved the location, space, cleanliness and car parking. Thank you for decorating for Halloween. Above and beyond our expectations. The pool table was a big hit. Would love to return in the summer to make the most of the outdoor spaces.

We were fortunate to find a room at Keel Lodge when friends were unable to go. Sarah and her team gave us a warm and friendly welcome. The room was immaculate, the location stunning and Sarah was kind enough to allow Mabli our dog to stay, the usual extra cost for having our pet was kindly donated to charity (RNLI) Raising money for that charity was the reason we were there in the 1st place. Thank you, we will be back.

Back home after our 3rd stay at Keel Lodges. In Spinnaker again. Lovely roomy chalet style property with large decked outside space. Clean, warm and comfy. Biscuits and milk are a lovely gesture. Great having two bathrooms. Looking forward to future visits
