One of the most architecturally satisfying ensembles of cathedral, cloisters, and cathedral close in England. Identifiably East Anglian by the use of flint in walling and in decorative patterns. The tower has unusual circular and lozenge decorations and is monumental in scale. The modern entrance and refectory extensions will divide opinion. The new entrance and reception in particular seems overbearing and does not sit easily when viewed from a distance. At least they are designed to be removed without damage to the historic structures. Inside, the nave seems amazingly long and high and has sumptuous stone fan-vaulted ceilings, studded with gilded bosses too far away to appreciate. The wood choir stalls and misericords bear close scrutiny for their intricate carving. On a sunny late afternoon the nave is flooded with light that burnishes the stained glass. It's hard to imagine a better free spectacle.

During an overnight stay in Norwich, we decided to visit Norwich Cathedral. It wasn’t a cathedral we were particularly familiar with, but our son has a Pilgrim Passport and, having previously visited places like St Paul's Cathedral, Ely Cathedral, Salisbury Cathedral, and Canterbury Cathedral, we thought it would be a great opportunity to add another stamp. We arrived on foot, as the Cathedral Quarter is right in the heart of the city. Entry is free, and it’s open daily from 7am to 6:30pm, which makes it very accessible. As it turned out, the cathedral is absolutely stunning—widely regarded as one of the finest examples of Romanesque (Norman) architecture in Europe. It boasts the second-tallest spire in England and the largest collection of medieval roof boss sculptures in the world. We entered via the cloisters and immediately felt transported somewhere magical—very reminiscent of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Inside, there’s a fascinating mix of history and storytelling, from the copper baptismal font made using bowls from the former Rowntree's factory, to memorials such as that of Edith Cavell, a local nurse who sacrificed her life during the First World War. On our way out, we stopped at the The Refectory Bakery & Cafe, which has incredible views through its glass walls and skylights. The pastries were excellent and a perfect way to round off the visit. We also made sure to find the Paddington Bear statue in the Upper Close, which was a lovely extra for our son. We only wish we’d had more time to explore, as we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. A truly beautiful and memorable place—well worth seeing.
