Pewsey makes a quiet, well-connected base for exploring the Vale of Pewsey and the wider North Wessex Downs. Hotel choice in the village itself is limited to a couple of pubs with rooms, so most visitors looking for a fuller range of hotels use Marlborough or Devizes as a base, both around 15 to 20 minutes' drive away and offering historic coaching inns, small independent hotels and a wider choice of restaurants. Marlborough in particular combines an attractive Georgian high street with easy access to Avebury and the Marlborough Downs, while Devizes offers a good base for the Kennet and Avon Canal further west, including the famous Caen Hill flight of locks.
Wherever you base yourself, Pewsey's direct rail link to London Paddington and towns further west makes it a genuinely practical option for a short break without a car, and its position roughly midway between Avebury and Stonehenge means a hotel here puts both of Wiltshire's great prehistoric sites within reach in a single day. Booking ahead is worth doing around the Pewsey Carnival, held annually in September and one of the oldest carnivals in the county, when local accommodation is in higher demand than usual.
