Staying centrally, within a few minutes' walk of the castle, NYMR station and beck, suits couples and anyone without a car who wants to eat out at Willowgate Bistro or one of the coaching inns and stroll back afterwards — the trade-off is that options are limited in number and the best of them, like The White Swan, get booked up quickly around NYMR gala weekends and the August heather season. Families and anyone staying more than a couple of nights tend to do better with self-catering cottages in or just outside town, or in nearby villages such as Thornton-le-Dale and Levisham, which offer more space, kitchens for cooking after a long day out, and often a garden — useful with kids or dogs in tow.

Price-wise, expect a noticeable jump for July and August, half-terms, and especially the last fortnight of August when the moors turn purple and demand for anything within striking distance spikes hard; a double room that costs £90 in November can be £150-plus at the August peak.
