Cae Llwyn - Otter

Photo: Cae Llwyn Lodges

Rhayader sits at the gateway to the Elan Valley, where reservoirs and dams cut through dramatic landscape, walking trails crisscross the hills, and cycling routes run through some of Wales's most rewarding terrain. The town itself is a working market centre; nearby Llandrindod Wells has a Victorian lake and independent shops, while Builth Wells offers riverside walks and regular events at the Royal Welsh Showground. Gigrin Farm, a few miles away, is known for its daily red kite feeding. The surrounding area falls within a Dark Sky Reserve, which matters if you're interested in stargazing from your hot tub after dark.

Cae Llwyn - Otter is a detached safari tent sleeping five across two bedrooms—one double and one bunk—with a shared bathroom in an external shower room. The interior is open-plan, combining living, dining and kitchen in one bright space with a smart TV and electric cooking. A decked terrace overlooks the garden; a private six-person hot tub sits at one end. Electricity, Wi-Fi, bed linen and towels are included. The tent itself is warm and well finished, with modern essentials underneath the canvas. No smoking inside.

This works for families wanting something different from a standard cottage, couples after a bit of novelty with comfort, or anyone drawn to the walking and cycling round Elan Valley. The location suits a long weekend where you might spend one evening in the hot tub and a couple of days out on the hills or in town.

The Otter was great to stay in just a few things really. SOFA was very itchy to sit on and I have Lymphedema in my leg and it bothered my leg.alot. Also No lamps in the bedroom WHICH I am confused by. Hot tub was great and I did get in touch with you and straight away you brought the temp down abit and it was much better. Thank you so much for sorting that out

This is our 6th time visiting Cae Llwyn, and all times have stayed at the Fawns Rest lodge! Our visits begun in June 2024, then Sep, January 2025, May 25, June 25 & now June 2026! 😊 we have had some of the bestest memories here in Mid Wales, and travelling out, with this time being extra special, as we are pregnant and my partner proposed to me at the Craig Goch Dam in the Elan Valley! On which particular day, the bigger dams were overflowing!! Breathtaking! (massively recommend visiting Elan Valley). Claire is so lovely, and has always been so accommodating. I have contacted her a couple of times pre arrival regarding birthday balloons and banners to be ready in the lodge for our arrival, she has always been great at responding, brilliant communication. The staff around are lovely and friendly. Lodge is always pristine, so comfortable, peaceful & cosy. The hot tub has always been an amazing touch, especially at night time, on a clear night (the stars are unreal), or an early sunrise 🥰 surrounded by the incredible views. We love the lodge so much, hence why we've always come back to the same one! We love the very cute neighbours 🐑 for welcoming us in to their home! Absolutely stunning location, it really is just the best. We knew this time would be cherished as we don't know yet when we will be able to return, but we will be back in the future, with an additional guest! Thank you for genuinely giving us some of the bestest moments of our lives. Wales will always be our special place, and it really did all begin with finding this little gem, Cae Llwyn Lodges ❤️

My partner and I stayed in the Fox Den for 3 nights recently. The cabin was small but cosy and had everything we needed to enjoy our time. The surroundings were stunning and the lambs in the immediate fields on the property were a joy to watch. It was an excellent base for exploring the local area including Rhayader the Elan Valley. The owners were friendly and very helpful throughout booking process and the stay, where they were on hand to answer any questions.
