Hotels in Ropley

Ropley itself has no hotels, so a stay here usually means basing yourself in one of the nearby Hampshire towns and treating the village as a day trip destination for its railway and walks. New Alresford, four miles west, is the obvious choice: a handsome Georgian watercress town with a range of small hotels, inns and B&Bs, including the historic Swan Hotel on the main street, all within easy reach of the Watercress Line's western terminus. Alton, at the eastern end of the heritage railway, has its own selection of hotels and guesthouses and a mainline station for onward travel to London. Winchester, a little further west, offers the widest choice of hotels in the area, from budget chains to boutique townhouse rooms, alongside its cathedral and riverside walks, and makes a comfortable base for exploring both Ropley and the wider South Downs.

Further afield, country house hotels and coaching inns are scattered through the villages around the A31 corridor, many set in the same chalk downland and beech woodland that surrounds Ropley itself. Booking ahead is worthwhile in late spring and summer, when Watercress Line galas and the Alresford Watercress Festival draw extra visitors to the area, and rooms in the smaller towns can fill quickly.
