North Yorkshire Moors Railway

This place is missing a trick! The railway station used in the Harry Potter films is on this route (Goathland Station) and its absolutely adorable. This should be all over the advertising! We had a lovely day out on the NYMR. Sadly the steam train wasn't passed as fit to use for our journey but we saw others on the line. If we'd disembarked at Pickering it would've been a 3 hour wait to return so, as it wasn't such a good day weather-wise we stayed on the train and came straight back. The volunteer staff were all lovely and the views are pretty. Dog loved it too.

We were on an organised tour and it was a lovely day and great experience and the weather was pretty good too. Can’t imagine if we had gone the week before because it would have been very uncomfortable. The staff were polite friendly and knowledgeable overall a brilliant day.

I visit quite a few heritage railways. I was very disappointed. Carriage windows are not only dirty but very dirty with green mould growing over them. Nobody bothers to Service the train either so rubbish and debris is left on the tables between trips. I have seen better kept rolling stock, stations and emphilia at almost every heritage railway I have visited. Perhaps the staff need to visit some of these for ideas. Very disappointed that the train was hauled by a fume belching diesel one way and steam the other. I was especially upset that one of the volunteers (whom I asked a question of) quickly deviated from talking about the NYMR into conspiracy theories, politics and outright racism. I felt very let down and that I had wasted my money. It cost £26 (including booking fee) for return from Goathland to Pickering plus another £5.50 to park the car.

Great nostalgia for a train ride through the moors to Whitby. Not a cheap experience, but they do remind clients constantly that it is an expensive service to provide. We think the service could have run to toilets at Whitby station. We know there were toilets on the trains, but opted to expect platform facilities due to queues waiting on board. Instead, we had to search Whitby for a toilet, then pay 50p for the privilege! Whitby itself is mildly historic but overtaken by the "Kiss me Quick" frontages everywhere. Good place for fish and chips, but very expensive.
