Camping in Seascale

Camping around Seascale means trading the busy, well-serviced sites of the central Lake District for something wilder and considerably quieter, on the fringes of Wasdale, Eskdale and the western fells. As everywhere in England, wild camping without the landowner's permission is against the law, so stick to recognised campsites and touring parks rather than pitching on open fell or farmland; the exception some walkers rely on is the informal high-fell wild camping tolerated in parts of the Lake District National Park, but that etiquette applies to the high, remote fell tops well above the valley floor, not the coastal strip around Seascale itself. Sites within a short drive of the village range from simple, quiet farm campsites to slightly larger touring and caravan parks with better facilities, and several are positioned specifically for walkers heading into Wasdale for Scafell Pike, Great Gable and the Wasdale Screes, or into Eskdale for gentler valley walking and the steam railway.

The terrain here is a real contrast to the rest of the Lakes: exposed coastal flatland gives way very quickly to steep, rocky fell country, so campers should come prepared for changeable weather blowing straight in off the Irish Sea, even when inland valleys are calm. The best camping season runs from late spring through early autumn, broadly April to September, when daylight hours are longest and the ground is driest underfoot; the shoulder months of May, June and September often give the most reliable combination of good weather and thin crowds, since this coast never gets as busy as Windermere or Coniston even at the height of summer. Midges can be a nuisance on still, warm evenings near the becks and valley bottoms, as in most parts of the Lake District. For those who want the views and the peace without the tent-pitching, glamping options such as camping pods, shepherd's huts and safari tents have started to appear on sites around Eskdale and the wider western Lakes, offering a warmer, more comfortable way to experience this remote and little-visited stretch of coast and fell.
