About Skeld Caravan Park and Campsite
Skeld Caravan Park and Campsite occupies a waterfront setting on Shetland's West Mainland, built around a small marina and pier that give the site an unusually maritime feel for a campsite. It is run by the Skeld Waterfront Development Trust, a local charity, and has developed with support from European LEADER funding into a well-equipped four-star touring park.
Pitches include fifteen tent spaces on grass and nineteen electric hook-up pitches for caravans and motorhomes, some with hard standing and marina views from as little as ten metres off the water. The amenity block covers showers, toilets, a kitchen with microwave and hob, a washing machine and dryer, and free wifi, while outside there are picnic tables, a play area and a wildlife hide used for watching seals and otters working the inlet. Dogs are welcome throughout the site.
The West Mainland location puts Skeld within easy reach of the beaches at Reawick and Sandness, the ferry to Foula, and the drive north to Eshaness, while remaining under half an hour from Lerwick. Booking is handled through the park's own online system, and the marina setting makes it a popular stop for boat owners as well as campers, with the small pier used by local fishing boats as well as visiting yachts. The trust's charitable status means profits are reinvested in the site and the wider Skeld community rather than taken out as commercial profit, which shows in the standard of the amenity block relative to the size of the operation.
