Hotels in Shetland

Where to stay in Shetland depends mostly on how much driving you want to do each day. Lerwick, the capital, holds the largest cluster of places to stay and puts the Shetland Museum, the harbour, restaurants and the NorthLink ferry terminal within walking distance, making it the obvious choice for a first visit or for anyone without a car for part of their trip. Its hotels range from modern harbourside blocks built for ferry passengers and business travellers to converted townhouses and former merchants' homes in the narrow lanes of the Old Town, many of them family-run for decades.

Outside Lerwick, the choice narrows but the settings improve. Brae and the North Mainland put you closest to Eshaness and the ferry crossings to Yell and Unst, and tend to suit visitors building a longer, wilder itinerary around the northern isles. The South Mainland, close to Sumburgh Airport, Jarlshof and Sumburgh Head, is the natural base for a wildlife-focused trip timed around the puffin season, while Scalloway and Tingwall offer a quieter, more local alternative just a short drive from the capital, with sea views and lower rates than the centre of Lerwick.

Shetland's total number of hotel and guest house rooms is small by mainland standards, and it does not grow to meet demand at busy times, so timing your booking matters more here than in most parts of Scotland. The Up Helly Aa fire festival in late January fills Lerwick's rooms months in advance, and the peak of the summer season, from June to August, does the same as ferry and flight capacity reaches its limit. Outside those windows, particularly in spring and early autumn, rates ease and availability is far more forgiving, making it easier to base yourself wherever suits your itinerary rather than wherever still has a room.
