What diners say
Great experience! The dining section upstairs is a nice relief from downstairs. The food was incredible- the marmite butter was 10/10. Pie was also lovely. I will say service could’ve been better, our waiter was unsure and awkward but perhaps he was just learning!

I ate in the place twice the Sunday roast. First time portion was much more generous and the meat was more tender. It a shame that they did not maintain consistency

🚇 Old Street 🍺 £6.70 Princess Pilsner The Princess of Shoreditch sits in a quiet backstreet in Shoreditch, East London, the nearest Tube is Old Street. Records show there’s been a pub on this site since 1742. It was rebuilt in the 19th century and started life as a Whitbread house named The Princess Royal. This is a one-bar, two-room gastropub with an elegant understated, “less is more” feel. The bright and airy ground-floor bar features a traditional servery and an impressive bar back. There’s plenty of seating with low tables, chairs, and leather banquettes. Decorative touches include a huge mirror and a lovely old Whitbread sign above the door. Upstairs, reached via a wrought-iron spiral staircase, is the dining room. It’s stylish with a boarded floor, fireplace, green walls, black-and-white prints of the local area, and neatly set tables and chairs. The beer selection offers a small but varied keg lineup. Three cask pumps were present but not on when I visited. I opted for the Princess Pilsner — excellent pint, though at a slightly above-average price. The food menu is seasonal British fare, focused on local sourced ingredients. Fish and chips is £21, and I hear the sticky toffee pudding is a must. I arrived just after 12:30pm on a mild Saturday lunchtime in October. The pub had just opened, and I was the only punter in. The atmosphere was relaxed, with a calming soundtrack setting the tone. Service was spot on — the two staff on duty were friendly, busy preparing for the day, and happy to show me around. Sometimes the word “gastro” puts off those just after a pint, but this pub balances both worlds nicely — a bar for casual drinking and a smart space for a proper meal. I really enjoyed my visit. The Whitbread heritage, the striking architecture, the understated decor, the spiral staircase, and a perfectly poured pint all made for a great stop. Our first time trying a Sunday roast and it didn't disappoint! We had a beef roast which was as delicious as the reviews say. Our dining experience was made even greater because our server Christina was so warm and welcoming. She put us right at ease. Thank you so much for the amazing experience. Will definitely come again.

Diners like this gastropub's delicious Sunday roasts, especially the porchetta and lamb, and highlight the generous portions and excellent whisky cocktails. They also mention the lovely atmosphere, friendly staff, and good selection of wines.
Some reviews mention the food can be inconsistent.
