About Plas Dinas Country House

Plas Dinas is a Grade II listed house dating from the mid-seventeenth century, a couple of miles south of Caernarfon and within easy reach of both the Menai Strait and the western approaches to Yr Wyddfa. It was for generations the Welsh home of the Armstrong-Jones family, and the portraits, photographs and furniture in the public rooms reflect that history rather than a decorator's idea of it.

Accommodation runs to eleven bedrooms, all individually styled and rated to five-star standard. Sizes vary a good deal — some are generous rooms in the older part of the house with four-posters and estate views, others are smaller and simpler. Several have baths as well as showers. The house is small enough that it never feels busy, and the drawing room with its open fire tends to be where guests end up before dinner.

There is a restaurant on site serving dinner to residents and non-residents, with menus that lean on local meat, Menai shellfish and Welsh cheeses. Breakfast is cooked to order. The house also takes weddings and small private events, so it is worth checking when booking if you want a quiet weekend. A separate self-catering cottage is available on the grounds for longer stays or families.

The location works well if you want to combine mountains with the coast and the castle towns. Caernarfon and its castle are five minutes away, the Llyn Peninsula beaches around twenty-five minutes, and the Llanberis Pass and the Snowdon paths roughly the same. It suits couples and older travellers looking for a comfortable, characterful base rather than a resort hotel, and works particularly well out of season.

We recently stayed here and found it to be a beautiful place with lovely grounds, perfect for an evening walk and a relaxing break. The accommodation and surroundings were excellent. Unfortunately, we didn't feel that the food represented good value for money. The meals were expensive, we were still hungry afterwards, and the new potatoes served as a side were hard. We also felt the drinks were overpriced – £45 for two beers and two glasses of wine seemed excessive. The most disappointing part of our stay was an issue with my gluten allergy. When we checked in, the hotel was aware that I required a gluten-free diet, and they even provided gluten-free biscuits in the room. My evening meal was also catered for appropriately. However, at breakfast on our first morning, bread was placed on the table on my side. As it was placed specifically in front of me, I assumed it was gluten-free. Unfortunately, it wasn't, and I suffered an allergic reaction, which unfortunately affected the rest of our holiday. While the setting and accommodation were lovely, the dining experience did not meet our expectations, either in terms of value or allergy awareness. We would consider staying here again because of the beautiful location, but we would choose to eat elsewhere.

We have previously stayed at Plas Dinas with breakfast and afternoon tea, which wa excellent. This time we came for a birthday afternoon tea. The staff are friendly and everything runs smoothly. The afternoon tea was beautifully presented and everything tasted delicious. My selection was gluten free and I didn't feel I was missing out on anything, the selection was very good. The garden and flower displays were beautiful. We had a very pleasant leisurely afternoon, sitting in the lounge and walking in the garden. We'll worth the visit. Would have loved to stay the night 😊 maybe next time. Thank you to everyone at Plas Dinas Country House Hotel.

We were married at Plas Dinas and stayed there the night before. The staff were truly excellent throughout and their attention to detail was second to none. The effort they put in was amazing from drying the grass in the morning so we could have it outside to the extras we found in the room. The rooms it's self was so comfortable, with an amazing free standing bathtub. staff at Plas Dinas really helped make it such a lovely day and we can't thank them enough for it. Annie really helped with the planning process and made things so easy for us. We also had dinner at the gunroomm with my personal favourite being the duck or the beef which I cannot recommend enough.

Thoroughly enjoyed and pleased with our stay at Plas Dinas, situated in a lovely landscaped and quiet setting for a weekend away. The food was excellent, all rooms we visited were spotless, warm and beautifully decorated, the gardens and flowers are a beautiful sight to walk through. All staff were friendly and professional whenever encountered and catered to any and all of our needs when notified, will definitely recommend and be visiting in the near future, no complaints and 5 star all round.
