Ty Gwyn is a former coaching inn on the road into Betws-y-Coed, just across the Waterloo Bridge from the village centre. Parts of the building date to the sixteenth century and it has been serving travellers on the Holyhead road for a very long time. Low beams, uneven floors and open fires are all present, and the place has been in the same family hands for decades.
The bedrooms are individual and characterful rather than uniform. Several have four-poster beds and exposed timbers; a few have spa baths. Ceilings are low in the older rooms, which is worth knowing if you are tall. All are en suite. The inn is small enough that service is personal, and booking direct by phone usually secures the best rate.
Eating is a strong point. The restaurant has a long-standing reputation locally and serves dinner nightly along with a bar menu, working through Welsh lamb and beef, local fish and game in season.
