Camping in Sproatley

Sproatley and the surrounding Holderness countryside are flat, open and largely agricultural, which makes for easy cycling and walking but offers little natural shelter, so anyone planning to camp here needs to think about wind as much as rain. As everywhere in England, wild camping without the landowner's permission is illegal, so a pitch at a proper site or a farm campsite with the owner's consent is the way to do it. The obvious choice close to Sproatley is Burton Constable Holiday Park, which sits inside the historic parkland of Burton Constable Hall itself, just outside the village: a genuinely distinctive setting for touring pitches and statics, with the Hall, its lake and its gardens on the doorstep.

Beyond the immediate village, the Holderness coast around Hornsea has a longer-established tradition of caravan and camping parks, many aimed at families wanting easy beach access alongside touring and tent pitches, and these make a reasonable alternative base if a sea view matters more than proximity to the Hall. Smaller farm-based campsites also crop up around Hedon and the villages between Hull and the coast, typically simple, low-key affairs with basic facilities rather than large resort-style parks, in keeping with the quiet, rural character of this part of Yorkshire.

Late spring through to early autumn is the best window for camping here: the ground is drier, days are longer for exploring the Hornsea Rail Trail or Burton Constable's parkland, and the exposed Holderness landscape is at its most forgiving. Outside those months, the flat terrain and North Sea winds can make tent camping distinctly bracing, so a caravan, motorhome or one of the increasing number of glamping options — pods, safari tents and similar fixed structures at sites in the area — is a more comfortable way to experience this stretch of the East Riding without fully exposing yourself to its weather.
