Tattenhall makes a relaxed, well-connected base for exploring the Cheshire countryside without the crowds of Chester itself. Hotel options directly in the village are limited, in keeping with its small size, but nearby Peckforton Castle offers one of the region's most distinctive stays — a Victorian mock-medieval castle set in private woodland, complete with a spa and views over the Peckforton Hills. Village pubs including The Bear and The Sportsman's Arms also let rooms, giving a simpler, more affordable alternative right in the heart of things, close to the railway station and within easy reach of the Sandstone Trail.
Chester, just 20 minutes north by car, opens up a much larger choice of hotels, from budget chains to boutique townhouses inside the city walls, useful if you want to combine a countryside break with a day exploring the cathedral, the Rows and the Roman remains. Wherever you base yourself, Tattenhall's position between Chester and the sandstone ridge means you are rarely more than half an hour from a castle, a hilltop walk or a decent pub lunch. Booking ahead is worth doing for anything near Beeston Castle or the Ice Cream Farm during school holidays and fine summer weekends, when the area's family attractions draw visitors from across the North West.
