Camping in Tonbridge

Tonbridge itself is a compact market town rather than a camping destination, but it sits right on the edge of the High Weald, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty whose wooded ridges, orchards and small farms hold a scattering of campsites and glamping sites within a short drive. As everywhere in England, wild camping without the landowner's permission is against the law, so a booked pitch on a proper site is the way to go; the good news is that the Weald's mix of working farms and small rural operators means options range from simple grassy fields to well-equipped glamping pods and shepherd's huts.

The Weald's clay-and-sandstone terrain means sites can turn heavy after prolonged rain, so late spring through early autumn, roughly May to September, is the most reliable window for tents, with July and August the busiest and best booked ahead. Sites closer to the Kent Downs to the north tend to sit on chalkier, better-draining ground, while those deeper into the Weald reward visitors with denser woodland and a stronger sense of remoteness despite being barely half an hour from Tonbridge itself.

For those who prefer a roof over their heads without giving up the outdoor feel, glamping has taken hold across the area, with shepherd's huts, safari tents and converted farm buildings increasingly common alongside traditional pitches. Many sites are run by working farms, so it is worth checking directly for facilities, fire pits and dog policies before booking, and for river-adjacent stays it is worth noting that the Medway's water meadows around Haysden Country Park, though not campsites themselves, make for a scenic day out from a base further into the Weald.
