Camping in Torver

Camping around Torver means proper Lake District fell country: bracken-covered slopes, fast-running becks, and weather that can change within the hour, even in summer. As in the rest of England, wild camping without the landowner's permission is not legal, so stick to established sites — fortunately the area around Torver and neighbouring Coniston has some excellent ones. Coniston Hall Campsite, on the western shore of Coniston Water, is a simple, open field site with no marked pitches, ideal for tent campers wanting direct access to the lake for swimming, kayaking or launching a boat. A little further round, Coniston Park Coppice sits within 63 acres of National Trust woodland, with pitches set in open glades and easy access to water sports on the lake, plus a good network of walking and cycling routes right from the gate.

Both sites put you within easy reach of the Old Man of Coniston and Dow Crag, as well as the gentler valley walk along Torver Beck, so campers can tailor each day to the weather and their energy levels. The fells above Torver are exposed and can be genuinely testing underfoot, so proper boots, waterproofs and a map are essential even on what looks like a fine day — conditions on the tops are markedly harsher than down by the lake. May to September is the most reliable window for camping here, with long daylight hours and (relatively) drier ground, though the Lake District's famous rainfall means it pays to come prepared whatever the forecast.

For those who'd rather skip the tent pegs, several sites in the area also offer glamping options — pods, static caravans or safari tents — giving a taste of the outdoor life around Coniston Water with a proper bed and a roof that doesn't depend on your guy ropes holding. It's a good middle ground for families or first-time campers wanting to experience this corner of the Lakes without the full exposure of canvas.
