Camping in Waldron

Waldron sits in the heart of the High Weald, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty of small fields, ancient woodland and sunken lanes, making it an appealing spot for a countryside camping trip in East Sussex. As with anywhere in England, wild camping without the landowner's permission is illegal, so pitching up in fields, woodland or on the roadside around Waldron is not an option; instead, visitors should use one of the area's established campsites and farm-based sites, several of which are within a short drive of the village.

Little Dernwood Farm, on Dern Lane in Waldron itself, offers a touring site with around 25 pitches, while nearby Dernwood Farm runs a well-regarded camping and glamping operation across 70 acres of ancient coppiced woodland, with tent-only camping, open fires, dog-friendly pitches and a dedicated area for hammock and tree-tent camping. The farm's own shop and café, at the site entrance, sells home-reared meat and other local produce, making it easy to eat well without leaving the woods. Further afield, Wilderness Wood at Hadlow Down and other Wealden farms offer similar low-key, nature-focused camping and glamping, in keeping with the area's working-woodland character.

The Weald's clay soils and dense tree cover mean conditions can turn muddy after rain, so late spring to early autumn, roughly May to September, is the most reliable and comfortable season for camping here, when the woods are dry underfoot and the evenings are long enough to enjoy a fire. Glamping options such as yurts, bell tents and shepherd's huts are increasingly available on local farms for those who want the woodland setting without full self-sufficiency, and they extend the camping season into the cooler shoulder months. Whatever the pitch, Waldron's camping is understated and rural rather than resort-like, well suited to walkers heading out into Ashdown Forest or simply looking for a quiet night under Wealden trees.
