What diners say
Came here twice after how much I liked it the first time. They offer pastries but also savoury food like sandwiches and bagels. The first time I had a chocolate cronut and a round-shape pastry with custard and apple. The cronut was crusty and flaky with lots of chocolate flavour. The apple one was delicious, mainly because of the custard cream that felt comforting and homely, and reminded me of the Spanish desserts and pastries with custards that we have over there. The second time I ordered a pistachio cronut and a similar round-shape pastry with apricot. The cronut was also very good in the vein of the chocolate one. The pistachio cream was rich in flavour and it had what it seemed to be some kind of caramel that was mildly sweet. The apricot pastry was still warm from the oven and with the syrup the custard was a bit gooey and liquidity so I didn’t enjoy it as much as the other time. I would advise the team waits for those pastries to cool down completely so the custard cream can settle. Really loved the venue and its location as well. It feels like an oasis in the middle of East London. Highly recommended if you are in the area.

One of the best bakeries in London. It is a proper city institution for a reason: the choice is huge, the quality is high, the atmosphere is very comforting. They offer a wide array of freshly baked sweet and savoury pastries. I took two of the famous crodoughs for takeaway: pistachio salted caramel cronut and marshmallow Nutella cronut. Both were outstanding and combined the best of both worlds: the filling of a doughnut with the structure and flakiness of a croissant. The dough had multiple buttery layers and a lovely light texture, while the fillings were extremely generous. The combination of pistachio and salted caramel creme was especially memorable: nutty, slightly salty and balanced. The marshmallow Nutella had chocolate-hazelnut sweetness and soft marshmallow touch. I also cannot wait to come back and try their cookies and pain suisse, because the display looked seriously tempting.

The phrase “hidden gem” is probably over-used but describes Rinkoffs perfectly 😃 Located down an alley off Mile End Road, it is definitely worth the effort to find. They are rightly renowned for their crodoughs, which are awesome, sweet, indulgent and substantial, you know you’ve had a treat 😘 The cinnamon bun is fabulous as well, soft, sweet and perfectly tangy, with a coffee, heaven. My favourite may well be the iced pain au raisins though 😍 Beautiful, flaky pastry, fruity and chewy raisins, sweet, sticky icing, delicious. Reminds me of the eccles cakes I used to get growing up in Lancashire, and there is no greater compliment than that! Fantastic neighbourhood bakery, friendly people, delicious products and low prices. Definitely worth a trip to Whitechapel 😁

I traveled across London to visit this spot after hearing about its incredible 115-year family history, but I left with a bit of a mixed experience. As a newcomer, the shop felt a little chaotic to walk into. The handwritten menu board is massive and overwhelming, which makes it take a lot of time to stand there and figure out what is actually available. I was really hoping to see deep-rooted traditional bakes, but the historic identity felt buried under generic high-street trends like iced donuts and croissants. I also chose to skip the coffee, as bakeries with menus this huge usually treat coffee as a low-quality afterthought. That being said, the actual baking quality is undeniably solid and way better than a supermarket. The blueberry muffin was a little dry but okay, while the iced cinnamon swirl was absolute perfection, soft, perfectly moist, and not an over-sweetened sugar bomb. I actually paired the bakes with a cup from Hermanos Coffee nearby, and the rich Colombian espresso cut through the pastries perfectly; a proper bakery item goes incredibly well with a high-quality Colombian coffee. If you live locally, this is a great choice for quality baking. They have a rare, beautiful history here, and instead of chasing standard modern trends or letting the shop look dated, streamlining the menu would easily clear up the confusion. Finding a better way to highlight the look of the bakery and truly showcase the family story would make this feel like a true destination, a place where every customer can feel like a part of that family history.
