8 handpicked places to stay

Aldeburgh's accommodation reflects the town itself: understated, characterful and rarely flashy. Grand seafront hotels with decades of history sit comfortably alongside traditional pubs offering rooms above the bar, and a scattering of guest houses and bed and breakfasts run by owners who know the town inside out. Many properties occupy handsome Georgian or Victorian buildings along The Parade, Crag Path and the High Street, and a room with a sea view is one of the most sought-after features in the town, particularly during the summer months and the Aldeburgh Festival in June, when demand for beds comfortably outstrips supply.

Because Aldeburgh is a small town rather than a sprawling resort, almost everywhere to stay is within easy walking distance of the beach, the Moot Hall, the fish stalls and the shops and restaurants along the High Street, so the choice tends to come down to style and budget rather than location. Upmarket hotels here favour a traditional, comfortable feel over contemporary flash, with good restaurants and bars that double as places locals go for a special dinner. Mid-range options include several well-regarded pubs with rooms, popular with walkers and weekend visitors who want a proper bar downstairs and simple, comfortable rooms above. At the more modest end, family-run bed and breakfasts and guest houses offer a warmer, more personal welcome, often in period buildings just back from the seafront, and are a good match for anyone visiting for the birdwatching at Minsmere, the concerts at Snape, or simply a quiet few days by the sea.
