Camping around Brampton means camping in genuine Hadrian’s Wall country, with sites set among the farmland and low hills that roll between the town and the Roman frontier. As in the rest of England, wild camping remains illegal without the express permission of the landowner, so pitching up on open fell or farmland without asking first is not an option here, however tempting the empty hillsides look. Fortunately there is no real need to try, since a number of proper campsites and farm-based pitches operate in the area, many within easy reach of Birdoswald Fort, Lanercost Priory and the walking trails that follow the wall westward towards Carlisle.
The terrain here is gentler than the high fells further south in the Lake District, characterised by rolling farmland, wooded river gorges like Gelt Woods, and the long green line of the wall itself, making it well suited to family camping and multi-day wall-walking trips alike. Talkin Tarn, just south of town, adds a further draw for tents pitched nearby, with lakeside paths and watersports on the doorstep. Late spring to early autumn is the most comfortable window for camping, when daylight hours are long and the ground has properly dried out after winter; this stretch of Cumbria sits in something of a rain shadow compared with the Lake District proper, but waterproof kit is still sensible given the region’s changeable weather.
For those who would rather skip the guy ropes, glamping has taken hold in the countryside around Brampton in recent years, with shepherd’s huts, pods and yurts appearing on farms within a short drive of the wall. These give walkers and families a comfortable base with the same easy access to Birdoswald, Lanercost and the Gelt gorge, without needing to carry or pitch a full tent, and many include wood-burners or private fire pits that suit the cooler border evenings.
