Cardiff Caravan and Camping Park
Pontcanna Fields, Fields Park Rd, Pontcanna, Cardiff CF11 9XR, UK
The only touring park inside the city, in parkland a mile and a half from the castle
About Cardiff Caravan and Camping Park
Run by the city council and set in Pontcanna Fields, this is as central as camping in a British capital gets. The park occupies a corner of the flat riverside parkland that runs north from Sophia Gardens, screened by mature trees, with the Taff Trail passing the gate. From the entrance it's a walk of about twenty-five minutes along the river into the centre, past the cricket ground and through Bute Park, which means you can arrive by tent and still make a rugby international, a concert or a night out without ever getting into a car.
The site takes tents, touring caravans and motorhomes and stays open all year. Pitches are level and grassy with hardstanding available, and there's a heated shower and toilet block, accessible facilities, laundry and wi-fi around reception. It's a functional municipal site rather than a resort—there's no shop, pool or play area—but the washblock is good and the setting does the work. Dogs are welcome on leads with limitless space to walk them along the riverbank and Llandaff Fields.
Being inside the city, it books out completely for Six Nations weekends and major stadium events, so reserve well ahead. Note that it's a well-used urban park: expect joggers, cyclists and dog walkers from early morning, and a background hum from the city rather than rural silence.

What visitors say
⭐⭐⭐☆☆ Stayed here while visiting Cardiff and found it to be a practical base rather than a destination in itself. The campsite is a little dated and could do with some modernisation, but it was clean enough and had the facilities needed for a short stay. The biggest positive is the location. It’s easy to get into Cardiff city centre, making it a convenient option if you’re planning to spend most of your time exploring the city rather than on the campsite. Overall, not the fanciest site we’ve stayed on, but it served its purpose and provided a handy place to stay while enjoying Cardiff. Follow our adventures: @daddyslittlelunchbox 🚐🏕️🌆 :

Beautiful campsite, has everything you would need. Fabulous walks along the river, cycle paths everywhere, they even have cinema pods 😊 You can walk right into the city from the campsite. Would definitely recommend it.

Lovely position, pretty woodland and great staff, BUT the shower block a disgrace, so bad I have emailed council CEO, I didn’t use the shower, made me feel a bit sick. Checks and cleaning signed but not done. Rotten bench seating. This all needs to be sorted, the site must make plenty to reinvest. Probably full solely due to location

Communication for booking was good. Location is excellent for getting to and from Cardiff city centre. Lovely parks and cycle paths close by. The site itself is a let down! Shower/toilet blocks are dated and dirty. Don’t think they were cleaned the whole time we were there! There’s a polite notice asking users to mop shower after use but the water in the mop bucket was dirty!!! There was a blocked toilet for 2 days-the toilets had been signed that they were checked so should have been made ‘Out of order’. Take away all of the ‘tat & jigsaws’ which are only harbouring more germs!!!! Requires a total refurb. We asked for a later checkout so that we could go into Pontcanna for some brunch in one of the local restaurants but unfortunately were only offered an hour so was no use to us. At £38 per night, the cost is up there with some of the more expensive Caravan & motorhome club sites and their facilities are immaculate. I would expect better as a council run site as it’s representing the city and tourism in Cardiff. Such a shame because it could be a fantastic site.
