Old Quay

Photo: Zee Cale

Old Quay is a ground-floor holiday cottage in Penzance overlooking Newlyn harbour. Five steps lead to the entrance, where everything you need sits on one level: a living room with smart TV, a kitchen with electric oven, induction hob, dishwasher and washer-dryer, two bedrooms with super-king beds, and two bathrooms with walk-in shower and cubicle shower respectively. A front garden has seating and a firepit, with parking for one car on site.

The harbour view is the draw here. Fishing boats come and go throughout the day and night; grey seals occasionally enter the water in front of the property. From the windows you can see across Mounts Bay to St Michaels Mount, along the coast towards Marazion, and on clear days towards Porthleven. Penzance promenade and Jubilee Pool are visible along the shore. If you'd rather not cook, the Red Lion Inn sits next door. Essentials including electricity, Wi-Fi, bed linen and towels are provided, and one well-behaved dog stays free. No smoking inside.

Looking very neglected these days. Quite sad for such a historic structure.

The scenery is beautiful, but traffic in town can be quite busy, plus there are many places where one must walk on the driving lane to continue on. Those places aren't very long, but the streets are narrow (because many of the buildings predate automobiles, and the roads were only wide enough for carts) and one must use great caution.

Newlyn Tidal Observatory. So important to hill baggers and yet so little celebrated.

Absolutely love Newlyn harbour, great place to see all the boats coming in, and it's good to see they are updating the fish market too.
