Cottenham and the fen villages around it are largely private, working farmland, so wild camping is not an option here without the landowner's explicit permission, and in England it is not a general right in the way it is in parts of Scotland. Anyone hoping to camp near the village needs to use a proper campsite or caravan park, or seek direct consent from a farmer or landowner, which is rarely offered given the intensively farmed nature of the surrounding fen.

What the area does offer is flat, open, easy walking and cycling country, well suited to a low-key camping trip based around a proper site rather than backcountry pitches. The drained fen terrain around Cottenham is dead level, criss-crossed by drainage dykes, droves and the guided busway path, so it favours gentle rides and walks rather than rugged hiking, and campers should be prepared for exposed, breezy conditions with little natural shelter across the open fields. The lack of tree cover also means fen skies are a real draw after dark, with minimal light pollution away from Cambridge itself.

Spring through early autumn is the best window for camping in this part of Cambridgeshire, when the ground is driest and evenings are long enough to enjoy sitting out. The Fens can turn waterlogged and genuinely bleak in winter, when the flat, drained land holds standing water and cold winds have nothing to break them, so a fen-edge camping trip is best planned for the warmer months. For those who would rather have a roof and a proper bed while still enjoying the fen setting, glamping options such as safari tents, shepherd's huts and pods can be found scattered around the wider Cambridgeshire countryside, giving a taste of the open, big-sky landscape without needing your own tent and kit, and they tend to book up quickly over summer weekends given the strong pull of nearby Cambridge.
