Montacute House is a beautiful Elizabethan Renaissance property, set amongst ornamental gardens overlooking a large deer park. The house itself is the primary attraction, built from local Ham stone which looks wonderful on a sunny day. At the time of my visit in spring 2026, only the ground floor was open, as the staircases were in need of repair (while the Ham stone is attractive, it's also relatively soft, and thus prone to excessive wear). Reduced ticket prices apply while this remains the case. Nonetheless, some interesting features were still accessible, including an inviting entrance hall and a rare 15th century French tapestry. The gardens are a fine complement to the house, characterised by neat topiary, floral borders, elegant fountains and an orangery. Information boards provide more detail on significant features. The distinctive porters' lodges are very photogenic. One housed a small display explaining the staircase restoration project. The estate also includes an Ice House, and further afield, the unusual Prospect Tower. This landmark is situated on St Michael's Hill, overlooking extensive views of the Somerset countryside. The walk from the house takes around 30 minutes. Onsite facilities are good, with plenty of parking, a café, gift shop and toilets. Adult ticket prices at the time of my visit were £15, representing reasonable value.

Great NT property... will be a lot more to see once the staircases have been repaired inside the house. Huge house but can only walk around ground floor at the moment. Wonderful gardens to walk around and lovely cafe with inside and outside seating.

Wonderful house; the stairs are being renovated so you can only see one part of the house. £15 per person ticket price. Great for fans of Wolfe Hall.

Beautiful grounds. Was busy as it was Easter weekend. They were accommodating and even had an Easter bunny hunt for the children and a prize at the end. The manor was limited viewing due to staircase renovations. Grounds were a lovely walk and beautifully presented. Would highly recommend a visit.
