Beautiful castle, with ample grounds to enjoy walks (free to enter the outer grounds and walk the moat). Highlight is the ability to walk all the way around the castle ontop of the walls. Lots of historical information dotted around and within the small museum. Small gift shop and cafe. Fun activities set up for younger children. Whole place is very dog friendly. Staff are lovely.

Visited on Saturday, 21st March 2026. First time visit to this fantastic castle, which has an amazing 1,000-year history. Didn't purchase a ticket in advance, and didn't feel it would be necessary. The car park is small but adequate, and you pay at the adjacent castle ticket office. If you want to walk around the exterior of the castle, you don't need an entry ticket. Once inside the castle, you are presented with the unusual sight for castles of this sort in the form of what appear to be fairly modern (i.e., 200-year-old rather than 1,000-year-old) buildings. These buildings include a well-stocked shop, café and brilliant museum and castle history sections. The museum section leads you to the access route to the battlements, which provide stunning views both inside and of the vista around the castle. The history is fascinating ad its well worth a visit at any time.

Brilliant. Excellent fri3ndly and knowledgeable staff, especially the gentleman greeter. Amanda and other lady in shop were lovely also. Fantastic 900 year history lesson and wheelchair friendly. Shop lady was lovely with goof array of items, even if a bit cramped but it is 900 years old.

Definitively worth a visit if in the area, quite pricey admission (would have been 15% cheaper had we pre-booked the day before), but understand that heritage sites like this have high upkeep cost. Coffee shop was surprisingly decent, staffed by really nice people and reasonably priced. Our visit was turned into a 5 star visit when we had a lovely interaction with an employee (Sara) who was was very enthused in showing us around the "Grown up" items in the gift shop. What a lovely lady she is!
