Hotels in Inverness

8 handpicked places to stay

Where you base yourself in Inverness depends largely on how much of your trip is spent in the city and how much on the road. Staying in the compact centre, around the castle and Church Street, means everything from the station to restaurants and the river walks is within a few minutes on foot, and it suits anyone arriving by train or planning a short city break paired with day trips to Loch Ness or Culloden. The riverside stretch just south of the centre, around Ness Bank and Old Edinburgh Road, offers a quieter alternative with some of the city's best guest houses, still an easy walk from everything, and generally better value than the handful of central hotels.

Visitors focused on Culloden, Fort George or the Moray coast might prefer a base on the eastern edge of the city, where a few larger hotels sit closer to the A96 and A9, trading a little walkability for easier driving and parking. Those travelling the North Coast 500 or prioritising Loch Ness itself often push on to Drumnadrochit or Dores for their first or last night, using Inverness only as a supply stop, though this adds twenty to thirty minutes of driving each way back into the city. For most first-time visitors, though, the centre or the immediate riverside remains the simplest choice: Inverness is small enough that little is truly out of reach, and a central base maximises the time spent seeing the Highlands rather than driving between accommodation and attractions. Booking ahead matters more here than in many British cities, since the best guest houses have only a handful of rooms and fill quickly through the North Coast 500 season from May to September.
