Killinghall sits on the edge of Nidderdale, where the gentler, lower stretches of the valley begin to give way to the wilder moorland and dale scenery further upstream around Pateley Bridge and Nidderdale National Landscape. There is no campsite in the village itself, but its position on the A61 puts it within easy reach of sites scattered across Nidderdale and the countryside around Harrogate, from simple touring pitches to small farm-based campsites with a handful of glamping pods or shepherd's huts.
As with anywhere in England, wild camping is not permitted without the landowner's explicit permission, so it is worth booking a proper site in advance rather than assuming you can pitch up on riverbank land along the Nidd or on the open fringes of the dale. Established sites in the wider area tend to offer a good compromise: quiet, green surroundings without the legal grey area of wild camping, plus basic facilities such as showers and toilets that make a longer stay more comfortable.
The best months to camp near Killinghall run from late spring through to early autumn, when the Nidd valley is at its most inviting and long evenings suit walks along the river or out towards Ripley and the wider dale. Summer weekends can get busy at the more popular sites closer to Nidderdale's honeypot villages, so booking ahead is sensible if you have a particular spot in mind. Winter camping is possible but exposed, given the open, elevated nature of much of the surrounding countryside.
For those who would rather skip the tent altogether, glamping has become increasingly common across Nidderdale, with pods, yurts and converted farm buildings offering a more comfortable way to experience the same rolling, stone-walled landscape that draws campers to this part of North Yorkshire in the first place.
