Camping in Kirk Michael centres on Glen Wyllin, a well-established site set in a wooded glen that runs down to the village beach, making it one of the more scenic places to pitch a tent anywhere on the Isle of Man. The AA-rated site has around 90 pitches split across three separate camping areas, with a shop, showers, laundry facilities and a first aid room on hand, and furnished tents with air beds available to hire for those who prefer not to bring their own kit. The beach is only a couple of minutes' walk from the pitches, making it easy to fill days with rock pooling, swimming or simply watching the sun go down over the Irish Sea from the shingle.

It's worth remembering that the Isle of Man is not England, Wales or Scotland, and camping rules differ accordingly. There is no general legal right to wild camp on the island, and land here is almost entirely privately owned or managed by the Manx Government's Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture, so pitching up away from a recognised site normally requires the landowner's permission first. Sticking to established campsites like Glen Wyllin, or seeking permission directly from farmers and landowners for anything more remote, is the safest and most respectful approach for visitors unfamiliar with local practice.

The camping season on the west coast runs roughly from Easter through to September, with the busiest and most memorable period being the Isle of Man TT in late May and early June, when campsites near the course fill with motorcycling visitors and the village itself takes on a real buzz. Outside TT fortnight, expect a much quieter, more traditional camping experience geared around the beach, the glen and gentle countryside walks. For those who like the setting but not the tent-pitching, a small but growing number of glamping options, from static caravans to fully furnished tent hire at Glen Wyllin itself, offer a more comfortable way to enjoy the same stretch of coast.
