Camping in Newhaven

0 campsites, glamping sites and caravan parks

Newhaven sits on the open limestone plateau of the Peak District, at real altitude for England, where the weather can change quickly and shelter is scarce – it is not a spot for casual wild camping. As in the rest of England and Wales, wild camping on open land is illegal without the landowner’s permission (the exception being certain areas of Dartmoor), so anyone wanting to sleep out under the stars near Newhaven should use one of the area’s established sites rather than pitching on the fells or in fields.

Fortunately, Newhaven has camping built into its identity: Newhaven Caravan & Camping Park sits right at the road junction next to the old Newhaven Inn, offering touring pitches for tents, caravans and motorhomes as well as static holiday caravans, and it puts guests within about a mile of the High Peak Trail and a short ride of the Tissington Trail – ideal for walkers and cyclists who want to head straight out onto the old railway paths rather than drive to a trailhead. Further afield, the White Peak villages around Hartington, Monyash and Alstonefield have additional small campsites and caravan parks set among dry stone walls and grazing land, typical of this part of the National Park.

May to September is the most comfortable window for camping here, with longer daylight for exploring the trails and a better chance of settled weather; the exposed plateau can feel bleak and cold outside those months, even when lower-lying parts of the Peak District are mild. For those who want the outdoor setting without a tent, glamping options – pods, yurts and safari tents – are increasingly common on farms and small sites across the White Peak, offering solid shelter against the moorland weather while keeping the trails and dales on the doorstep.
