Staithes is a working fishing village on the Yorkshire Coast where the water level determines the character of each day. At high tide it reaches the sea wall; at low tide a small sandy bay appears in the harbour. Sunnydene sits a few dozen yards from this scene, a traditional fisherman's cottage that has been renovated while keeping its original character intact. Seven stone steps lead from the narrow street to the front door.
Inside, the ground floor holds a living and dining room with an open fire, and a compact kitchen with a window overlooking the water. Upstairs, a first-floor bathroom serves a twin bedroom with sea views. The second floor has a double bedroom, also facing the water. The cottage takes four people, with electricity, heating, bed linen, towels and wi-fi all included; the initial fuel for the fire is too. One dog can stay free of charge. There is no smoking inside. Parking uses the public car park in the village.
Staithes has a free museum and art gallery, and hosts an annual art festival. The Cleveland Way walking trail runs along the cliff tops, connecting other coastal villages like Runswick Bay and Robin Hoods Bay. Whitby, with its abbey ruins and cobbled streets, is nearby. The area suits people who want to walk, explore a genuine working village rather than a resort, and spend time by the water.
