About Craigard Camping and Caravan Site
Craigard sits on the edge of Castlebay, Barra's main village, within easy walking distance of the harbour, Kisimul Castle and the island's shops and pubs, making it the most convenient base for anyone touring the southern end of the Outer Hebrides. The site occupies a modest, sloped field with views down over the bay, and its small scale compared with mainland caravan parks suits visitors who have come to Barra specifically for its quieter, more compact version of the island experience.
Pitches are available for tents, campervans and touring caravans, with basic toilet and washing facilities on site and the full range of village services, including a shop, cafes and a filling station, only a short walk away. The site's position close to Castlebay also makes it a convenient stop for anyone arriving by the Oban or Mallaig ferry, or flying into Barra's tidal beach airport at Traigh Mhòr a short drive to the north.
From Craigard, the whole of Barra and neighbouring Vatersay can be covered in a day or two by car, taking in the beach airport, Kisimul Castle by boat, and the causeway south to Vatersay's own beaches, before a ferry connection north to Eriskay and the rest of the island chain for those continuing their trip.
Because pitch numbers are limited and Barra has only a handful of alternatives, calling ahead in July and August is worthwhile, particularly around the island's Feis and other summer events when accommodation of every kind fills up. Outside peak weeks the site is generally quiet, and its short walk into the village means an evening meal or a pint does not require moving the car once you have pitched up for the night.
