Deciding where to base yourself in the Outer Hebrides matters more than in most parts of Scotland, because distances are longer than they look on a map and the islands divide into distinct characters. Stornoway on Lewis is the only real town, with the ferry terminal, airport and the widest spread of accommodation, restaurants and shops, making it a sensible first or last night for anyone arriving or leaving by sea. Harris, joined to Lewis but very different in feel, has the islands' most celebrated beaches at Luskentyre, Seilebost and Scarista, and its handful of hotels and guest houses tend to be smaller, more design-conscious and often built around a restaurant with rooms.

Further south, North Uist, Benbecula and South Uist are linked by causeways and offer a quieter, more scattered choice of accommodation, generally suited to those prioritising wildlife, fishing or a slower pace over nightlife and choice of restaurants. Barra, reached by its own ferry or a short flight, has a small concentration of places to stay around Castlebay, useful for a self-contained visit that does not involve the length of the full island chain.

Booking ahead matters here more than almost anywhere else in Britain. Room numbers are small, many properties close for winter, and the summer ferry timetable means demand for beds around Stornoway and Tarbert peaks hard between June and August. Anyone planning to island-hop should also check which harbour or airport each property sits closest to, since a hotel booked with Stornoway's ferry in mind can mean an additional two hours of driving if your actual crossing lands at Tarbert or Castlebay instead.
