Camping in Outer Hebrides

Camping in the Outer Hebrides means Atlantic weather and Atlantic scenery in equal measure. The islands' machair-backed beaches, particularly along the west coast of Harris and the Uists, offer some of the most dramatic pitches in Britain, with short grass running straight onto white sand and a clear run of horizon to the sea. Ground is generally flat and well-drained near the coast but can turn boggy quickly inland after rain, and campsites here tend to be simple by design: a few fields with basic facilities rather than resort-style parks, in keeping with the crofting land many of them occupy.

Scotland's right to roam extends to wild camping, and it is legal across most of the Outer Hebrides provided you follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code: pitch away from houses and roads, stay for no more than two or three nights in one spot, and leave no trace. In practice, machair land is fragile and often actively grazed or cropped by crofters, so wild campers are asked to use existing tracks, avoid enclosed fields and check locally before pitching on machair during the growing season. A small number of popular beaches, including parts of Luskentyre, have seen informal restrictions introduced after summer overcrowding, so a proper campsite is often the more considerate option in peak season.

Weather is the defining factor for any Hebridean camping trip. Wind off the Atlantic is near constant and can be severe even in summer, so a genuinely stable tent and solid pegs matter more here than almost anywhere else in the UK. May, June and early September tend to offer the calmest, driest conditions and the added benefit of very long daylight hours, while midges can be troublesome on still, humid days from late June through August, particularly inland and near standing water. Midsummer camping under a sky that barely darkens, with the sound of the sea and little else, is one of the more memorable ways to experience the islands.
