About Laxdale Holiday Park
Laxdale Holiday Park lies a short drive north of Stornoway, making it the most practical base for anyone travelling by ferry or plane and wanting full facilities close to the islands' only town. It is a longstanding, family-run site set beside the Laxdale burn, with a mix of grass touring pitches, hard-standing hook-ups for caravans and motorhomes, and a bunkhouse for those without their own kit.
The park is more developed than most Hebridean campsites, with showers, laundry facilities, electric hook-up and wifi available across the touring pitches, plus a small shop for essentials, making it a sensible first or last stop for anyone arriving off the Ullapool ferry or Stornoway flights with limited time to shop before setting off around the islands. Its position just off the main road north means Callanish, the Butt of Lewis and the west coast beaches are all within easy day-trip range.
While it lacks the direct sea views of the machair sites further south, the sheltered, wooded setting along the burn offers welcome protection from Atlantic winds compared with more exposed coastal pitches, and the on-site facilities make it a reliable choice for longer stays or for topping up supplies and doing laundry partway through an island tour.
The park operates through the main visitor season and takes bookings in advance, which is worth doing for July and August arrivals, since it sits on the only realistic overnight route for cars and campervans coming off the early Ullapool sailing. Its position also makes it a good base for exploring the Lewis war memorial, the Arnol Blackhouse museum and the harbour at Stornoway itself, all within a few miles, before heading further afield to the Callanish stones or the beaches of Uig.
