Cabarfeidh Hotel

Cabarfeidh is a gem of a hotel in Stornoway, Scotland. An unfortunate mishap brought us here but Stornoway, the Cabarfeidh, and the people have been absolutely charming. I walked into the Cabarfeidh with 4 bags, no reservations, and a cab waiting outside to take me elsewhere. Nathan, God bless him, looked up, grasped the situation, booked a room and sent me on my way saying, I’ll take care of your bags. I returned to find my bags in a spotless, spacious room, an incredibly comfy bed, plenty of storage, and Scottish biscuits on the table. Breakfast is included. They have an extensive buffet and a variety of menu options. They’re all great. I had scrambled eggs with Scottish smoked salmon one morning. Better than you can imagine. Full restaurant and bar for evenings. Alas, not included but all delicious. I’ll sum up the Cabarfeidh with my best Boston accent: “wicked good”.

We had a lovely stay. We were fortunate to be in a newly refurbished room which was done to a high standard. Our friends were in an accessible room which has not yet been refurbished but it was fine and fully met the needs of a wheelchair user, roll in shower etc. The staff were lovely. Our breakfast waitress ensured our particular dietary requirements were met (coeliac disease) and the manager was lovely and had a genuine interest in his guests and was very knowledgeable about the area and available activities. The food in the restaurant was very tasty and beatifully presented. We hope to visit Lewis and Harris again and will definitely stay at the Cabarfeidh Hotel when we do.

I ate here on Easter Sunday. I had high hopes after reading the reviews but left feeling disappointed. The carrot and ginger soup was thin and watery, the flavour could have been amazing. I had the langoustines with chill and garlic butter. There was not any taste of chilli and the langoustines were very lack lustre. The food is very overpriced for the quality of it.£44 for the langoustines!. I'm happy to pay good money for good food but this is not one of the occasions. The olives were good though, even if they were served at the same time as the starters Whilst the staff were polite and friendly, one didn't know the dessert menu well and I ordered a decaff coffee but was given a normal one. They offered to replace it but I by this time I wanted to pay the bill and leave. The restaurant was a typical one for a hotel, a bit soulless.

Absolutely shocking. Could not sleep in the place for the noise of what we are told is the kitchen extractor fan. Was going very loudly until 1.45 am and sounds like someone is hoovering in the room next to us. Started again at 7 am this morning. Phoned reception around midnight and night porter came up and offered to switch rooms, I explained that's not suitable at this time to ask me and my 72 year old dad to get out of bed, dressed, pack and move room. He said the fan was on a timer and would cut out in 5/10 minutes. It went on for 2 more hours. I've now had 5 hours sleep and a 4 hour drive ahead of me, and this was our most expensive accomodation and last night of the trip, so really just a terrible place to finish our holiday and I would say avoid avoid avoid. I spoke to the duty manager this morning only to get fed some line about because it's through Expedia that he can't do a refund. Don't believe it for a second and I'll be contacting them directly. Was a computer says no scenario and the guy had zero gumption and even less interest in sorting the situation out. Summary: the place looks great and fancy, but it's the worst stay of our trip. The hostel on Barra was £85 for a twin room and was a much better night's sleep than this.
