Paignton's seafront Esplanade is home to The Palace Hotel, a 55-room base with pool, sauna and steam room close to the beach and zoo.

About The Palace Hotel

Paignton's Esplanade runs along the seafront, close to the beaches and attractions that draw visitors to this part of Devon, including Paignton Zoo. The Palace Hotel occupies a spot on this road, giving guests an easy walk to the sand as well as access to the town's wider amenities.

The hotel has 55 rooms, including family and accessible options, all with en-suite bathrooms and the choice to have drinks brought to the room. Breakfast is served on-site, along with restaurant meals, kids' meals and packed lunches for days out, and there's a bar and outdoor seating in the garden. Indoors, guests can use the indoor swimming pool, sauna and steam room, though these spa facilities are not always as well kept as the rest of the hotel. Free on-site parking is provided, useful given the coastal location.

Staff are consistently described as friendly and helpful, and the food gets a good mention, with plenty of choice at both breakfast and dinner. Beyond the hotel, the area offers golf, fishing, cycling and walking routes, watersports, and a good spread of pubs and restaurants nearby, making it a practical base for exploring this stretch of Devon coast.

Spent a night here with family and will go back, the palace hotel was clean and tidy, the receptionist was very helpful and had a smile for everyone. The eveing meal was very nice, breakfast was ok plenty of it. Swimming pool you have to book a time slot for. 2 cocktails for £12 till 9pm then they go up in price. The room we had was quite large only problem i dont like like coming in the room when im sleeping but unfortunately you could see the light all around the door. Otherwise we had a lovely stay we will all be back soon.

What a disaster our 2 night stay here was. The 4 stars are for the excellent staff and not for the hotel which is sadly only worth 2 stars. We arrived, they asked us to pay and allocated us our room. We go to the room - its a double but we booked a twin! Also we realised that we had already paid for our stay a couple of weeks previously. Back down to reception who found us a twin room, though initially they thought there may be none spare. We also said we had already previously paid and they apologised and refunded us. Our booking confirmation said our room had a seating area with a view but the single seat just looked onto a carpark and we also had noise from the kitchen extractor. The hotel was run down and not really clean. The radiator tops in the lounge area were filthy as were parts of our room. In our room there was a missing screw on the toilet door lock and the toilet roll holder was falling to one side and although the bathroom radiator worked for a while the bedroom one did not. Both mornings there was no hot water for a wash, let-alone a shower. The first morning they said there was a problem in the road but then said it was fixed yet we still had no hot water the next day too. We used the pool but the ladies changing room was not particularly clean and again, just run down. We also didn't feel the breakfast was worth the money. Sadly this hotel needs a major update the only thing that currently saves it are the staff. I must add that when we left, the receptionist did refund the money we had paid to use the pool.

We stayed at the hotel for 5 days (end of March). The room (room 62) was very nice, large, with a view of the sea and the pier. It had a large, comfortable double bed (two single beds zipped together). Everything was very clean, with daily room cleaning. The bathroom had a shower and bathtub. The hotel itself is very British with a charming atmosphere. There is a bar, a lounge with a fireplace, and a restaurant. We had a good quality three-course dinner each evening. Breakfast was continental and full English, with everything you could want. The staff was very friendly and guest-oriented. There was ample parking at the hotel. During the week, the guests were predominantly retirees. The only negative point was the lack of hot water in the mornings for the last two days, which the hotel was unable to resolve. This was unpleasant.
