Camping in Portmeirion
3 campsites, glamping sites and caravan parks
Portmeirion itself has no campsite; the village is run as a paid-entry visitor attraction with hotel rooms and self-catering cottages rather than pitches, so campers base themselves in the countryside around Porthmadog and the Vale of Ffestiniog instead, all within a short drive of the gates. The terrain shifts quickly from flat estuary meadows near the coast to the steeper river valleys around Maentwrog and Blaenau Ffestiniog, so it is worth checking a site's setting before booking if level ground or easy access matters.
Weather on this stretch of the Gwynedd coast is milder than the mountains just inland, but still properly Welsh: expect a real chance of rain in any month, with the driest and most settled spells usually falling between May and September. Sites nearer the coast, such as those around Porthmadog, tend to drain better and feel less exposed than valley sites after heavy rain, while riverside pitches near Maentwrog can be more sheltered from wind but slower to dry out underfoot.
Wild camping without landowner permission is not legal in Wales, unlike in Scotland, so pitching up on the estuary sands, in Snowdonia's open country or on any farmland around Portmeirion without asking first risks being asked to move on; the exception some campers rely on is agreeing informally with a farmer or landowner, which is never guaranteed. The established sites listed here all take tents as well as tourers and motorhomes, and most operate from around Easter through to late October, with a shorter or closed season over winter.
May, June and September tend to offer the best combination of decent weather and lighter crowds, avoiding the school-holiday peak of late July and August when the more popular sites and Portmeirion's own car park fill early. Booking ahead for any summer weekend is strongly advised, particularly around the Ffestiniog Railway's busier event days.
