About Millgate House

Millgate House is a listed Georgian townhouse tucked just off Richmond's Market Place, run for decades as one of the country's most decorated small bed and breakfasts. It has been named among the Good Hotel Guide's top UK hotels for gardens and has appeared repeatedly in the Sunday Times, the Telegraph and Gardens Illustrated, largely on the strength of its steeply terraced walled garden behind the house, which drops away towards the River Swale.

The house itself is furnished with antiques, art and books collected over years, and rooms are individually decorated in keeping with the building's period. Breakfasts are cooked to order using local and seasonal produce and served in a room looking out over the garden, a detail regular guests single out as much as the setting itself.

Its position a minute or two from the Market Place puts the castle, theatre and shops within easy walking distance, while the garden and quiet of Millgate itself give the house a genuine retreat feel once the front door closes. It suits couples and garden enthusiasts looking for a slower, more considered stay than a standard hotel room offers.

I booked this hotel at the last minute, as l wanted to visit family in the area. Very accessible car park. I had a warm welcome, in fact the staff have been amazing. The hotel was very quiet with very few guests, sadly there was no access to having breakfast. My room was massive, clean, comfortable with vintage furniture. Generally l had a Fabulous stay, though for the first time I have been struggling with trying to justify the price l paid for two nights. I find it hard as l don't normally worry about the cost. I suppose it seemed so deserted, a few other guests, the kitchen is having work done, so it has been closed. A good bar is available, lots of space. My five stars are for the staff, always attentive, welcoming on first name bases, and really happy to deal with any inquiry and help to make the atmosphere. With a smile. 💗

Excellent hotel in the middle of town yet surprisingly quiet. Clean, tidy and perhaps needing a little freshen to paintwork. Staff were outstandingly polite and helpful. Lady who checked us in was great also showing us to our room, serving drink at the bar and taking the food order. Next morning we were served a great full English and vegetarian breakfasts but a charming and delightful lady. Thank you for a good stay and would use again when next in Newark
