Lovely walk from the Carpark, where they have football pitches onto a path which goes behind the plantation. You join the road at the end and from there you can walk to Wymingbrook, or further up to Redmires dams or turn right down the road which takes you back to where you started from in circle just long enough for us.

Nice to see where the City Battalion, 12th Yorks and Lancs were stationed for training before deployment to Egypt in December 1915 and then to the Somme. I'm not sure if there is any sign of the wooden huts they had on the dog leg part of the plantation at its western end. This is largely because that part of the woods is covered in brambles. You can see the remains of the WW2 POW buildings at the eastern end of the plantation which was built on what was the City Battalion's parade ground. There is still much of the 8ft wall around the whole site. The Three Merry Lads and Sportsman pubs they frequented are still there, although the latter is closed. There are practice trenches that they dug on nearby Quarry Hill

Plantation is very important. Especially, more important at Sheffield. Because Sheffield has large land to need to plant trees for Climate Change.

Interesting place and you get an idea of the area covered. If you do go solid footwear and watch where you step, on our visit millions of flies.
