Families and larger groups will find Sheldon Cottage works well as a self-contained base in Bishops Castle. The house has three bedrooms—a double with ensuite on the ground floor, a kingsize upstairs, and a twin room—plus a family bathroom and second shower room, so there's space for eight people without fighting over the bathroom. Two separate living areas mean you can spread out: one has a sofa bed and games console, the other an open fire and smart TV. The kitchen is equipped for proper cooking rather than holiday shortcuts, with a dishwasher and washer-dryer taking the chores out of downtime.

An enclosed garden and patio open from the kitchen and dining area, giving children and dogs somewhere to play safely; one pet is welcome. Parking is on the road outside. Essentials like electricity, bed linen, towels and wifi are covered.

The cottage sits in the centre of the market town, within walking distance of independent shops, cafes and pubs including the Boars Head nearby. Bishops Castle hosts regular festivals through the year—Michaelmas Fair, Beer Festival and Party in the Park among them. The house is not fully accessible; there are steps at the front door and between the kitchen and ground-floor bedroom. No smoking inside.

Misleading, Unsafe, and Not Suitable for Guests With Mobility Needs I am submitting this review to provide an accurate and factual account of our recent stay at this property, and to highlight several serious concerns that future guests—particularly those with disabilities or mobility challenges—should be aware of. Upon arrival, the property was not presented in a clean or well‑maintained condition. There were visible stains on the carpets and lounge chairs, peeling paint around windows and walls, and the oven had not been cleaned, with grease and food residue left from previous use. The garden was overgrown, making the washing line unusable, and the downstairs bedroom and ensuite were in noticeably poor condition. The shower door only opened halfway and there were no grab handles, creating a significant safety risk for anyone with limited mobility. The listing did not disclose the multiple internal and external steps throughout the property. These included steps into the lounge, steps into the kitchen, steps up to the garden, and steps up to the downstairs bedroom. This made the cottage extremely difficult for my elderly stepfather, who uses a walking frame and is terminally ill. Had the property been accurately described, we would not have booked it. The outdoor area also posed several safety and hygiene concerns. The garden gate did not have a lock, and a pond was concealed beneath overgrown bushes, creating a hazard for children and pets. In addition, there were open bags of garden waste left in the garden, which were unsightly, unhygienic, and contributed further to the overall sense of neglect. Several kitchen chairs were unstable, and one collapsed while my stepfather was sitting on it, causing him to fall and injure his elbow. This incident alone demonstrates the lack of basic safety checks. Following our stay, we submitted a formal complaint to the holiday‑let company. Despite providing clear evidence, the company ruled in favour of the owners and issued a response that did not reflect the actual condition of the property. Key safety issues were overlooked, and the reply contradicted our documented experience. This was extremely disappointing and left us feeling that our concerns were not taken seriously. In summary, the property was misleadingly advertised, unsafe, and poorly maintained, and the complaint process offered no meaningful accountability. I strongly advise future guests—especially those with mobility issues, elderly relatives, children, or pets—to consider alternative accommodation.
