About Achnabobane Farmhouse

Open Highland farmland surrounds Achnabobane Farmhouse, with Ben Nevis rising in the distance and Spean Bridge just under two miles away. It's a quiet rural spot, the kind of place where walking boots and bicycles are as useful as a car, and the landscape itself is the main event.

The farmhouse dates from the Victorian era but the four rooms inside have been modernised, several with en-suite bathrooms, and all with free WiFi and drinks available in the room. Breakfast is included, reception runs around the clock, and free on-site parking makes arriving with kit and bikes straightforward. Pets are welcome too, so the trip needn't mean leaving the dog behind.

Outside the door there's fishing and golf within reach, along with cycling and walking routes that make the most of the surrounding countryside, and a pub, restaurant and eatery nearby for evenings when cooking isn't on the agenda. It's a straightforward base for exploring the hills around Spean Bridge rather than a destination in itself.

We stayed a few nights at Achnobobane Farmhouse to explore Fort Williams and the surrounding areas. The place is very welcoming and quiet. The owner enjoys discussions and it is always interesting to hear from each other on the various topics brought. We enjoyed the room and the rich breakfasts, we got flexibility and help to dry our wet shoes from all the hiking we did. Neil gave us the chance to taste German wines that we will rediscover when we get back home.

TLDR: It's not "Dog Friendly", it's "Dog Tolerant" (Their words, not mine). Overbearing host who comes across as rude. Good value for money if you don't mind lots of house rules and unwelcoming company. A reasonably priced bed for the night, if you're happy spend the entire time in your room. Memorable host, unfortunately not for the right reasons. Upon inital arrival, after ringing the bell and waiting a short while; the host appeared. I began the conversation woth "Hello, we're here to check-in 🙂", though I was quickly met with a sharp response of "Well that depends on who you are?!". No "Hello", "Welcome"... or any warm greeting. Oh boy, what was I in for? Once Neil (the host) had established we were infact, of course, legitimate booked guests - we were met with a scroll of house rules... including shoes being left when entering and your room key being left when leaving (even if you are returning e.g. going for a walk) in reception, breakfast only between 8am & 8.15am and parking between the lines... un the unmarked bays. Additionally, dogs must be on the lead at all times when at the property (Including the garden!) and must be left in your vehicle during mealtimes. I've never stayed at a Hotel, B&B, Hostel, AirB&B/property with a list of demands at such magnitude before. Hense the call-out. The room itself was nice. Complimentary tea, coffee, kettle & biscuits. Quite confined, though OK for one evening. Tiny TV included, though located ontop of the wardrobe? Comfy enough mattress, pillows and bedding. Shared toilet and bathroom, presumably by all guests in the house - certinally upstairs anyway. Odd feature regarding the toilet was the extractor fan would operate when the toilet light was switched on, despite being a seperate room and switch for the bathroom. Calling this out simply due to the very loud and awakening sound the fan causes - especially when used by guests in the night. Seems odd the fan is operated by the toilet light and not the bathroom light - given they are seperate rooms... The food at breakfast was good; though It felt quite claustraphobic given the 5 tables were only about 30cm appart - and all guests had to be in the frontroom between 8 and 8.15 for breakfast. During breakfast we saw a slightly different side to Neil, he seemed a little lighter toned and chattier. I did not eat my entire cooked breakfast, simply because I wasnt hungry enough. My leftovers included a small end of the sausage which i'd ordered. When Neil collected my plate from infront of me he exclaimed "Take that!", whilst hovering the plate back infront of me. Unsure as to what exactly he meant, I replied "I'm not sure what you mean, sorry" to which I was met with "For the dog.". I politely declined, only to then watch Neil offer my leftovers to another guests dogs, who of course alao politely declined... After gathering my belongings (for check-out), I proceeded to sit in my car for ~30 minutes, planning the day ahead. Note that I was in the carpark all this time. Once decided on my next ventures, I left. Within an hour I recieved an email from Neil stating "I was kind of expecting you to pop your head around the door to say bye, so you would settle the account.". To my utter shock, I had not paid due to confusion with Booking.com and being booked ~6 months prior. Why did Neil not approach me beforehand? Why was the expectation for me to approach him. Payment was ofcourse made swiftly and when I called to inform Neil within 2 hours of departure he stated "You're not the first and you won't be the last". Hoping this would be my last dealings with Neil, I was proven quickly wrong. After continuing onwards with my holiday, I noticed a missed call from Neil at 9.33pm 5 days later. Upon returning the call shortly after Neil claimed I had called him originally... "Well how else did I get your number?!". After politely explaining I had not called him again he stood by his claim and hung-up on me.

Rudest man I have encountered. Everyone is always so nice, I was surprised that a man like this runs a bed and breakfast. Sarcastic and unwelcoming. Questioned me about where I'm from in a way that felt judgemental and made me very uncomfortable. Was very rude about me speaking American English even though is my second language and it's the one we learn in south America. Incredibly xenophobic and condescending. Room was alright. Towel was clean. Maybe he had a hard life and that's why he is so sour and unpleasant.

We stayed for one night to explore Fort William and take the Jacobite train. The location is a bit outside of Fort William but absolutely stunning. Wonderful and kind host. When we are back in the area, we’ll visit again.
