Osprey Watching in the UK: Where to See Britain's Fishing Eagles

Ospreys died out in Britain and came back. Each spring they return from West Africa to nests you can watch from hides and webcams. The best places to see them, and when.
The osprey is one of Britain's great conservation stories. Persecuted to extinction in the UK by the early twentieth century, it returned to Scotland on its own in the 1950s and has since spread, with help, to England and Wales. Each spring ospreys return from West Africa to the same nests, and several of those nests have hides and webcams set up so visitors can watch them.
At a glance
When: ospreys arrive from late March into April and leave from August. Where: Rutland Water, the Dyfi estuary, Bassenthwaite and the Scottish Highlands. Cost: some reserves charge entry; webcams are free. Best moment: an osprey diving feet-first for a fish.
The best places
Rutland Water, Rutland
The Rutland Osprey Project brought ospreys back to England after more than 150 years, by moving young birds from Scotland to the reservoir in the late 1990s. Ospreys first bred there in 2001, and there are now several nests around the water. The Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust runs hides with views of nests and of birds fishing, at its reserves near Oakham.
The Dyfi estuary, mid Wales
The Dyfi Osprey Project, near Machynlleth, follows one of the most watched osprey nests in the world. A raised observatory looks across the marsh to the nest platform.
Bassenthwaite Lake, Lake District
Ospreys have bred near Bassenthwaite since 2001, the first in the Lake District for well over a century. Viewpoints in Dodd Wood, near Keswick, look across to the nest area and over the lake where the birds fish.
The Scottish Highlands
Loch Garten near Boat of Garten is where ospreys famously returned to Britain in the 1950s, and the RSPB centre there is open from April. Its nest has had mixed fortunes in recent years, so check recent news before travelling specially. Ospreys are now widespread across the Cairngorms and the Highlands, and can be seen fishing on lochs and rivers around Aviemore.
When to go
Spring: arrival and courtship
From late March into April, the birds return and pairs reunite at the nest. This is the time for dramatic sky-dances and nest building.
Summer: chicks and fishing
Eggs hatch in late May and June, and the adults fish constantly to feed the chicks. July is the best month to see fishing, and young birds make their first flights.
How to see one fishing
An osprey hunts by circling over water, hovering, then plunging feet-first to snatch a fish. Morning is often the best time. Some lochs and fish farms in Scotland, and areas around Rutland Water, offer fishing views; ask at the visitor centres.
Webcams
Several projects stream their nests live through the season. Watching before you go adds a lot to a visit.
