York Christmas Market: St Nicholas Fair Guide

York's St Nicholas Fair is unusually local: most of its traders come from Yorkshire. Dates for 2026, the Tuesday rest day that catches people out, and how to fit it around the Minster and the Shambles.

York's Christmas market — officially the St Nicholas Fair — is not the biggest in the country, but it may be the most local. More than four in five of its traders come from Yorkshire, and the food stalls lean heavily on the county's own producers. Add a medieval centre that looks the part in December, and it makes one of the best Christmas weekends in England.

At a glance

When: 12 November to 21 December 2026, closed on Tuesdays. Where: Parliament Street and St Sampson's Square. Cost: free to browse. Best for: Yorkshire produce in a medieval setting.

When it runs in 2026

The fair runs from Thursday 12 November to Monday 21 December 2026, from 10:30am to 7pm, closing at 5pm on the final day.

The detail that catches people out

The market is closed on Tuesdays — a weekly rest day for the traders. If your visit is a short midweek break, plan around it.

Where it is

The alpine-style chalets line Parliament Street and St Sampson's Square, in the heart of the old city, a couple of minutes' walk from the Shambles and ten from the Minster.

Around the market

The Shambles

The overhanging timber-framed street is a few steps away and is at its best at dusk in December. It is also extremely busy at weekends; early morning is the time to see it properly.

York Minster

The cathedral holds carol services and concerts through Advent, and it is one of the finest places in the country to hear choral music in December. Some events are ticketed and sell out, so check well ahead.

The walls

Walking a stretch of the city walls is free and takes you above the crowds. Sections close in icy weather, so do not leave it to the last day.

Practical notes

York is under two hours from London by train and the station is a ten-minute walk from the market, so a car is more trouble than help. Weekends in late November and December book up early, and city-centre rooms command a premium. Our York staycation guide covers where to stay, and you can compare hotels in York or cottages in York.

Beyond the city walls

Castle Howard

About half an hour away, the great house is dressed for Christmas each year; for 2026 the theme is Dickens. See our guide to stately homes at Christmas.

The North York Moors by steam

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway runs its Christmas trains from Pickering, under an hour from York — see Santa steam trains. Back in the city, our listings cover things to do in York.

If you are staying for Christmas itself rather than a market weekend, our guide to Christmas staycations has more on York at Christmas.
