Stately Homes at Christmas: Dressed Houses Worth the Trip

Chatsworth, Castle Howard and Blenheim each dress their state rooms around a Christmas theme. What is on in 2026, how to get tickets, and the quieter National Trust alternatives.
Every December, a number of Britain's great country houses are transformed. Rooms that normally show furniture and paintings are dressed around a seasonal theme, with trees in the halls, decorated tables and sometimes music and projections. The big three are Chatsworth, Castle Howard and Blenheim, and each sets a new theme every year.
At a glance
Chatsworth: The Twelve Days of Christmas, 7 November to 3 January. Castle Howard: A Dickens of a Christmas, 12 November to 3 January. Blenheim: Cinderella, 13 November to 3 January. Booking: timed tickets at all three.
The big three in 2026
Chatsworth, Derbyshire
The Duke of Devonshire's house in the Peak District takes The Twelve Days of Christmas as its 2026 theme, with each verse reimagined in a different part of the house. It runs from 7 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, and visits up to 13 December also include the Christmas market in the grounds. Bakewell, a few miles away, is the obvious base.
Castle Howard, North Yorkshire
The great baroque house near Malton runs A Dickens of a Christmas for 2026, built around scenes from Dickens's novels, from 12 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. It is about half an hour from York.
Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire
The birthplace of Winston Churchill, outside Woodstock, dresses its State Rooms around Cinderella for 2026, alongside an illuminated trail in the grounds, from 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027.
How to visit
Timed tickets, booked ahead
All three sell timed entry slots, and December weekends sell out. Weekday mornings in November are the quietest time and often the cheapest.
Allow for the grounds
The house visits take an hour or two, but the parkland at each is the real bonus on a crisp winter day. Chatsworth's park is open for walking, and Castle Howard's grounds run down to the lakes.
Quieter alternatives
Many National Trust and English Heritage houses decorate for Christmas too, usually on a smaller scale and at a fraction of the crowd, and often included for members. Check the individual property's listings from October, when the season's events are published.
Where to stay
Markets at the houses
Two of the three also run Christmas markets in their grounds: Chatsworth's up to 13 December, and Blenheim's in the Great Court until 20 December. For the big city markets, see our guide to UK Christmas market breaks.
A cottage near Bakewell for Chatsworth, somewhere in York or Malton for Castle Howard, or Oxford for Blenheim all work. For the rest of the season, see our guides to Christmas light trails and historic staycations.
