Camping in Stelling Minnis

Stelling Minnis sits on high, open ground in the Kent Downs, around its historic common, which makes it an appealing base for campers who want quiet countryside within easy reach of Canterbury and the coast. As with anywhere in England, wild camping is illegal without the landowner's permission, so plan to stay at a licensed campsite or a farm pitch that has agreed to take tents and campervans, rather than pitching up on the common or in a farmer's field uninvited. The common itself is privately owned by the trustees of the Lord Tomlin estate and managed for conservation, so it is not a camping site, however open it looks.

The wider Kent Downs landscape around Stelling Minnis - a mix of arable fields, orchards, hedgerowed lanes and pockets of ancient woodland - suits campsites that make the most of long views and quiet, dark skies rather than large-scale facilities, and you will find a scatter of small farm campsites and glamping set-ups across the Elham Valley and the villages either side of the old Stone Street road.
