Stillingfleet

Stillingfleet is a small village and civil parish in the Vale of York, sitting on the east bank of the River Ouse around six miles south of York itself. With a population of just a few hundred, it is the kind of place travellers pass through rather than head for deliberately — a scatter of brick cottages, farmland and a handful of streets, quiet enough that the loudest thing most days is the wind moving through the wheat fields.

• St Helen's Church — a Grade I listed 12th-century church built around 1154, famous for its south-west doorway: a five-order Norman arch carved with chevrons, foliage and 36 traditional "beak head" faces, considered one of the finest Romanesque doorways in the country. Inside hangs an even older treasure, a carved wooden door thought to date from the 10th century and decorated with Viking-style ironwork depicting a ship, a tree and several figures — it was restored in London in the 1990s before being rehung.
• The River Ouse towpath — a level, quiet stretch of riverside walking and cycling running along the village, popular with anglers and birdwatchers, and part of a wider network of paths through the Vale of York.

Stillingfleet lies just off the B1222 between York and Selby, around six miles south of York and a similar distance north of Selby. The village has no railway station of its own; the nearest mainline services are at York, which also gives fast connections down the East Coast Main Line to London and up to Edinburgh. By road, the A19 and A64 both pass within a few miles, and York's ring road makes the village an easy 15–20 minute drive from the city centre.

Spring and summer make the most of the riverside walks and the surrounding farmland, when the lanes around the village are at their greenest and days are long enough for a wander down to the Ouse after visiting the church. Autumn brings some lovely colour along the river, while winter is quieter still — St Helen's Church, unheated and softly lit, is arguably at its most atmospheric on a cold, still day.
