The Vale of York around Stillingfleet is gentle, flat farming country, and while it lacks a dedicated campsite in the village itself, it sits within reach of sites scattered across this part of North Yorkshire, from simple certificated sites on working farms to larger touring parks nearer York and Selby. As with anywhere in England, wild camping without the landowner's permission is against the law, so it is always worth checking ahead and booking a proper pitch rather than assuming open farmland is fair game.

The terrain here is about as easy as camping gets: level ground, quiet lanes and the slow curve of the River Ouse running past the village, making it a good choice for families or anyone touring by bike rather than looking for dramatic scenery. Riverside pitches near the Ouse can be atmospheric, though they come with the usual caveats of flat, low-lying land — check for flood risk with any site close to the water, particularly outside the summer months.

Spring through early autumn is the sensible window for camping here, when the ground is driest and the days long enough to make the most of an evening walk down to the river or across to St Helen's Church. Winter camping in the Vale of York is a much harder sell — the flat, open land offers little shelter and the ground can turn heavy after rain, so it is really a fair-weather destination rather than a year-round one.

For those who like their countryside without the tent-pitching, glamping options in the wider York and Selby area — shepherd's huts, pods and the odd yurt on working farms — offer a comfortable halfway house, combining the same rural setting with a proper bed and, usually, a roof that does not depend on the weather forecast. Given how close Stillingfleet sits to York, a glamping stay here also makes a relaxed, low-cost alternative base for exploring the city without the premium of a central hotel room.
