About Coul House Hotel

Culloden Battlefield lies within driving distance of Coul House Hotel, making it a handy base for exploring this corner of the Highlands, while the town of Strathpeffer itself offers a gentler pace with its Victorian spa heritage close by. Garve is a short drive away too, useful for those keen to venture further into the surrounding hills and glens.

The hotel itself has 21 rooms, kept comfortable and spotlessly clean, set within grounds that include charming gardens worth a wander before or after dinner. Guests can expect a warm welcome and attentive service throughout their stay, with staff noted for going out of their way to help. Facilities extend to an indoor swimming pool, gym, spa and sauna, along with a bar, meeting rooms and free WiFi, plus free on-site parking for those arriving by car. Pets are welcome, and porter and luggage storage services are on hand for added convenience.

The restaurant is a particular strength, with beautifully presented meals, a strong breakfast spread and chefs happy to accommodate different tastes. Coul House also operates as a wedding venue, so its gardens and public rooms see regular use for celebrations. Overall, it offers solid value for a Highland stay with easy access to local history and scenery.

One of the most remarkable hotel stays I’ve ever had. I honestly can’t say enough about how gorgeous, relaxing, and simply fun it is to stay here. From the moment you arrive, the place completely transports you. You feel as though you’ve stepped into another world. The interiors are beautiful, full of character and elegance without feeling stuffy, and the service is equally elegant and gracious. But perhaps my favorite part was the setting. Walking through the grounds and gardens, you really do feel as though you’re living in a grand country manor. There is something incredibly peaceful about the entire experience. One day here feels like it can wipe away weeks of stress. The food was another highlight. Dinner was wonderful—we had the bisque, the Scottish lamb, and the seafood catch of the day, and everything was excellent. My only regret was not ordering the chef’s special selection of ice creams for dessert! Instead, we had the Jaffa cake and the lemon panna cotta. Both were good, but they were the only dishes that didn’t quite reach the level of everything else. The Jaffa cake didn’t have enough of the orange flavor I was expecting, and the panna cotta had a little too much lemon essence for my taste. Breakfast, however, was absolutely delicious. And there is something very special about simply sitting there in the morning, enjoying a beautiful breakfast while looking out at the scenery. This isn’t just a hotel—it’s an experience. Beautiful interiors, wonderful food, gracious service, gorgeous grounds, and an atmosphere that makes you completely forget about the outside world. I only wish we had stayed longer.

Walking into the Coul House Hotel was like walking into a hotel from a novel. Our unexpected stay was amazing. The staff and owner Stuart made us feel so safe and special after a very long day driving NC500 route. We cannot think of one thing we would change, it was perfect. Thank you so much, we will be back. Louise and Peter June 2026

Somehow I ended up paying £380 for a rather pokey room. The carpet had seen better days and the bathroom had some surprising elements such as cheap panelling rather than tiles and an ill fitting vinyl flooring. That said, the food was exceptional and the hosts charming. The impressive silk curtains in the dining room were overdue a steam clean. There is an enchanting fairy walk in the pleasant gardens that children will adore and give fun to even adults.

I stumbled across the progress reports binder in my room and ended up reading every single one. What started as simple curiosity turned into something genuinely moving. It wasn't just a record of a hotel being restored, but a window into a life. The early optimism of 2003, the brutal honesty of the harder years, the children growing up through the pages. 20 years of a family pouring everything into something they love, documented with humility and humour. The hotel itself is everything the reports promised it would be. Warm, characterful, and beautifully maintained and run by people who clearly still care deeply about every detail. But it's the humanity behind it that sets Coul House apart. Stuart, I hope you're reading this. Keep writing. The binder matters more than you might realise. I spent my 30th birthday here and left with a lot to think about. Thank you for sharing your journey.
